Beginner Classes

The beginner classes need to be pre-booked, are limited to 6-7 dogs in the Oakley classes and run for 6 weeks. They cover the exercises that are useful for dogs and their humans to live in harmony with one another. They also provide a foundation for those wishing to further their training for obedience, agility or the show ring. These classes are suitable for dogs that have had no previous training but are too old for the puppy class. They are also suitable for re-homed dogs and for dogs and handlers who have already been to classes but would like an opportunity to refresh or establish their basic communication skills.
All dogs must be up to date with the vaccinations recommended for their age group by their vet. Puppies who have completed the puppy class are welcome, along with older dogs attending classes for the first time. However, we regret we are unable to take dogs with a history of aggression as they and their handlers often require more support than we are able to give in a class situation. Do ask about other ways in which we may be able to support you if you are experiencing these challenges.

Older children are welcome to take part in the training whilst under their parent’s supervision. Children under the age of 16 years MUST be accompanied by an adult.

The six week beginner course will include the following exercises:

Walking on a loose lead
Recall
Sit to greet people (no jumping up)
Stays
Safe play & retrieving
Emergency stop
Stand for examination
Leave on command

There is also normally time for question and answer sessions to deal with specific problems you may be having.

The cost for this 6 week course is £70. This price increase will take effect for all courses with start dates on or after April 1st 2010. The increased rise in the cost of Hall hire and Insurance forces these increased costs (our first for 5 years).
